Stop theft with RFID

Ostensibly, that's what Simply RFiD does.

We've been placing RFID tags on items, monitoring the movement of those RFID tags, and when someone says, "Hey, my stuff is missing", we show them a video clip of the last person to be coveting their 'stuff'.

But, we do much more than stop theft...  Like the guy that thought his laptop was stolen, only to discover, on the RFID triggered video, he left it sitting in the warehouse on a shelf. Nox isn't just about stopping theft -- it's about automating data collection.

An article on Nox came out last week in Homeland Security Today. Lakshmi, the author, did a fantastic overview of what Nox can do -- beyond theft.

Some quick examples that aren't theft related:

- Find file folders: Maybe we shouldn't be using so much paper?  But, if it's an important folder, Nox can track it for you so you know where it is when you need it. 

- Protect Employees: A typical building has 20+ video cameras and one security guard to watch them.  Nox diligently and tirelessly monitors movement and can alert you when your perimeter is breached.

- Provide help:  Using fall sensors, Nox can monitor for a slip / fall in a hallway or parking lot and help can be sent.

Meanwhile, it its spare time, Nox can also diligently protect the corporate (or, personal) assets from theft.

Roku - Finally...

10 years ago, I expected we would stream video into our living rooms.  Finally we can with Apple (last year with AppleTV) and Netflix with Roku.

I never bought the AppleTV.  Probably because I didn't find it compelling enough over my Netflix subscription and $300+ startup cost + purchase fees + no HDMI on my TV I wanted to use.  But, Netflix teamed with Roku to deliver a little plug in device that lets you stream about 10,000 movies/TV shows directly to your screen.

About ROKU:

- WiFi or Hardwired Internet

- HDMI, Composite, SVideo, and Component Video jacks

- One-purpose device that connects to Netflix seamlessly.

- Play any movie, free, that's on the Netflix instant Catalog.

- $99

I plugged mine in last night in about five minutes. My nine year old was operating it without any instruction before I could even make popcorn.

Pros:

- Easy

- Nice image quality. (Note: I have a 1080P system, too...  This is absolutely not 1080P...  But, for my occasional TV viewing, it's unbelievable).

- Cheap...  $100 and all the movies you can watch on your existing Netflix account.

Cons:

- None -- today.  

- Okay, not 'that many' titles I want to watch.  But, it's a 1.0 product and it's stunningly good for 1.0.  Simple, cheap, and some good content.

There has been whining about not being 1080P or the content is still limited.  Bah... This shit is good -- for what it is...  If you really need 1080P, you're gonna need Blu-Ray or wait until bandwidth can keep up with it.   And, if you want a big-selection, you're gonna just have to buy the discs until the licensing for all movies is available.
